How to Get Rid of a Blocked Ear
26 Sep, 2026
Common causes
- Ear wax build-up
- A cold, sinus infection or hay fever blocking the Eustachian tube
- Water trapped after swimming
- Pressure changes from flying
- An ear infection
What you can try
For wax, use olive oil drops for a few days. For cold or pressure, try yawning, swallowing or chewing gum, or gently breathe out with your nose pinched and mouth closed. Steam inhalation can help loosen congestion.
Decongestant nasal sprays (such as xylometazoline) can ease blockage from a cold but should not be used for more than 7 days.
When a pharmacy can help
Adults and children aged 1 to 17 with earache may be able to get advice and treatment through NHS Pharmacy First, depending on eligibility. If wax is the cause, an ear wax check can confirm it and clear it if needed.
Seek urgent help if
- You suddenly lose hearing in one ear
- You have severe pain, swelling behind the ear or a high temperature
- Fluid or blood is coming from the ear
