Ear Wax Removal in Nottingham: What to Expect
30 Sep, 2026
Why ear wax builds up
Ear wax is normal. It protects the ear canal and usually works its way out on its own. For some people it builds up and hardens, often because of narrow ear canals, hearing aids, earbuds or using cotton buds that push wax further in.
NHS GP practices in Nottingham no longer routinely remove ear wax, so many people now go to a pharmacy or private clinic instead.
Signs you may need ear wax removal
A build-up can cause:
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- A blocked or full feeling in the ear
- Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus)
- Earache or itchiness
- Hearing aids whistling or not working as well
What happens at your appointment
A trained clinician looks inside your ear first to check that wax is the cause and that your ear drum looks healthy. If removal is suitable, the wax is cleared using a gentle method such as microsuction, which uses a small suction tube and does not put water into the ear.
Most appointments are short and you can usually hear the difference straight away. If anything else is found, you will be advised on what to do next.
When to see a GP instead
Speak to your GP or call NHS 111 if you have:
- Sudden hearing loss
- Discharge, blood or a strong smell from the ear
- Severe pain, a high temperature or dizziness
- Something stuck in the ear
