Dengue Fever Vaccine: Who Can Have It?
23 Sep, 2026
What is dengue?
Dengue is a viral infection spread by day-biting mosquitoes. It is common in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of Africa. Most people have a flu-like illness, but a second infection can be more serious.
The vaccine
Qdenga is the dengue vaccine licensed in the UK. Current UK guidance recommends it for people aged 4 and over who have had dengue before and are travelling to, or living in, an area with dengue risk. It is given as 2 doses, 3 months apart.
It is not routinely recommended for people who have never had dengue. A clinician will talk this through with you.
Avoiding bites matters most
- Use an insect repellent containing 50% DEET, day and night
- Wear long sleeves and trousers where possible
- Stay in accommodation with screens or air conditioning
